Abdominoperineal Resection for Anstomotic Recurrnece following Sphincter-saving Procedure in Rectal Cancer

Abstract
Recentely, sphincter-saving resection for rectal cancer has become increasingly popular because of the extension of its indication for cure. This curative surgical treatment without sacrifice of the anal function gives much satisfaction to the
patient.
Regrettably, however, in about 10 percent of the patients, there are local or anastomotic recurrences one or two years after surgery.
In our hospital we have experienced a series of 4 patients undergoing abdominoperineal resection for "suture line recurrence" following sphincter-saving procedured in rectal cancer, All of the four patient are alive without evidence of recurrence
until
now. We recommend a careful rectal examination for the patient following sphincter-saving procedure at least for 2 years, because the suture line recurrence are usually within 2 years after operation.
